Fire Frog supplies and installs intumescent fire collars on PVC, HDPE, PP and other plastic pipe penetrations through fire-rated walls and slabs, on new builds and as retrofit collars in existing buildings.

Each collar is rated for a specific pipe material, outside diameter, wall or slab construction and fixing pattern, and that combination is what was tested. Fire Frog sizes each collar against the manufacturer's tested detail, fixes it as the system requires, and labels it so the next person can see what is there.

The same riser usually carries copper, cable and conduit alongside the plastic, so the collar is scoped as part of a sealed penetration that also takes fire stop sealant, wrap or coated batt around the rest.

New-build work is straightforward when the pipework is set out and the penetrations are clean. Retrofit is the other half of the work: a building already occupied or at handover where a plastic service needs a collar fitted around it.

Retrofit fire collars

Retrofit is the highest-volume collar job and it is the one with the tightest constraints. The pipe is in, the ceiling may be closed, and the collar has to be fitted around a live service without cutting it out. Split and hinged retrofit collars exist for exactly this, and they carry their own tested details and their own fixing requirements, which are not the same as the cast-in or new-build versions.

Which pipes need a collar

Any combustible or thermoplastic service through a fire-rated element is the usual trigger. That covers PVC and uPVC waste and stormwater, HDPE, polypropylene, and plastic-jacketed insulated services. Metallic pipework generally takes a different system rather than a collar, and mixed penetrations take both.

How a collar is sized and fixed

Sizing starts with the pipe's outside diameter and material, then the element it passes through: the construction type, the rating required and the thickness. That combination selects the collar and the tested detail, which in turn sets the fixing type, the number of fixings and their spacing. Fire Frog works to that detail and records the collar type and location on completion, so the installation can be certified without anyone guessing what was fitted.

Common questions

Can a fire collar be fitted to a pipe that is already installed?

Yes. Retrofit collars are made to go around a live service, and that is a large part of the work. What matters is that the retrofit version of the collar is rated for the pipe and the element it is fixed to, because the tested detail for a retrofit collar is not the same as for a cast-in one.

How much does a fire collar cost?

It depends on the pipe diameter, the substrate and how many are on the job, and retrofit access changes it more than anything else. Send through the project details with a rough count and you will get a scope and a price.

Does a copper or steel pipe need a collar?

Generally not. Metallic pipework does not soften and collapse the way plastic does, so it is usually sealed with a different tested system. Where a metallic service carries combustible insulation, the insulation is what drives the system selection.

Do you supply the collars or do we?

Either. Supply and install is the normal arrangement and it means the collar matches the tested detail we install to. If collars are already on site, they get checked against the penetration before anything is fixed.
